about the site

hello! you can call me webmaster atticus. i'm a dude who, with the curse of introversion and waaaaay too much time on his hands, just so happens to own the very website you're viewing, atteliere. it's a portmanteau of my online name and the word atelier (with an added -e because i'm annoying). you could say this site is its own atelier; i'm almost always busy workshopping and fixing this site, hence its inchoate state. thanks for coming!

this website is a space for all my incoherency and objects of my self-expression. i just started with this site, so expect a fuckton of changes along the way.

about the atticus

i'm gonna be honest i really don't know what the hell i should write here... i'm bad at introducing myself despite previous efforts. but, to start this off...

i'm extremely introverted. if you like typology, i am an ISTP 5w4 / melancholic phlegmatic / RLUEI. not exactly sure what everything means. but i'm sure it'll (somewhat) make sense. i love myself some alone time.

i consider myself a self-taught amateur graphic designer; this website is basically a showcase of my design work without... y'know... actually displaying it. anyway.

my #1 special interest is typography. i go cuckoo crazy when i see a semi-appealing typeface, so all the typographic choices on this site are very, very intentional. i also enjoy baking, (junk) journalling, and listening to music. insert music page here, future atticus. this will become real. trust. i'm also a pretty big the summer hikaru died fan, as proved by the images embellished around the site from the manga. lol... i think that's it.

i like this.

  • the summer hikaru died!!!
  • music.
  • journalling, scrapbooking, anything of the sort.
  • pastries.
  • graphic design.
  • powerlines or radio towers.
    • literally any type of machinery will do it for me.
  • lime green.
  • gen X soft-club / vectorheart design.
  • dressing myself up.
i dislike this.

  • weather above 30°c.
  • extremely loud people.
  • the current state of social media... i'm actually so annoyed i don't know why i haven't stopped using social media yet.
  • strong and / or bad smells.
  • generative AI.
  • blueberries and honeydew.

questionnaire

here's a questionnaire i answered that (kinda) gives more context to the site. original template is here, enjoy ^_^

1. Please introduce yourself.
hello! i am atticus, owner of atteliere on neocities.org.
2. How long have you been making websites?
i officially started this summer, lol.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
if you know about carrd / carrd pro... i was a carrd / rentry user for a loooooong ass time; even before then, i was using pre-existing templates on miscellaneous stite builders before i started to actually use some of my knowledge of htmlcss to start up what you're seeing.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
i like sites that stick to a theme, or sites that are wild and are themed with every page.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
honestly, i plan as i go along. that is, unless, i have a really great idea and plan out the entire thing beforehand, but i literally just do stuff when i feel like it. sorry!
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
philia995, webcatz (who i think is under a different name), humanfinny, avenue... there's a lot more.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
i love making graphics for my website. every image you see here is made by me!
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
html AND css. i enjoy it, but as a beginner, it's painful...
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
as of right now, i'm planning to make every single page have a diffrent layout.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
i'm pretty confident. haven't mastered it yet, but i'll improve.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
?
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
<div>.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
i almost always think about the aesthetics of the page and what its purpose is. the content comes later. i'm just more visuals oriented. (this page, though, was contents over visuals.)
14. Do you know JavaScript?
i kinda do... considering i have some JS snippets scattered around the homepage.
15. How about PHP?
...
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
i kinda think it does! i'm loving that gen x soft club / vectorheart design trend that happened in the late 90s to 2000s, so i tried to replicate that here but it ended up becoming something else.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
design. one hundred percent.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
atteliere.town... i see you... you will be mine...
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
this kinda is a nostalgia-focused website. i try to keep it #original, but i love me a site that perfectly captures that really specific early 2000s design style i like.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
...
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
i love buttons, banners, and button walls. i think it's a really stylistic and neat way to browse other websites on the internet. speaking of buttons, i made one myself. if you're observing, and you like what you see, you should go link me. no pressure.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
see 21.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
probably something different. i've changed my domain name, like, two or three times before i landed on atteliere. i guess that's starting over.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
not at all!! they inspire me more than they make me envious...
25. What text editor do you use?
phoenix code. hate to be the devil's advocate since they use generative AI, ffs.
26. Why do you use that one?
live preview.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
i host EVERYTHING on my website server, unless if it's for something offsite / a file that isn't in my subscription plan... so thank you file.garden. i've been using it in tandem with all my other internet projects.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
i've seen a lot of excellent sites on both neocities and nekoweb. i didn't even know there was a debate. i own a nekoweb site, but i haven't really thought of its purpose yet.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
...
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
i think so...? i don't know why i'm so questioning. lol. sorry!
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
both are super pleasing to me, although i really do prefer visual websites more.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
YES. i am so hellbent on having the same colours used on every page for cohesion purposes.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
nope. i've been burnt out, though. many times.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
it is purely a solitary hobby! i don't know anyone in my circle actively making a website other than myself.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
yes! some of my irl friends have checked it out. i think i've annoyed them with the self-promo, lmao.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
almost daily.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
once i've fully set my site in a layout that i am happy with, then i'll start to consider changing up the design. i'm happy right now, but it's unfinished. lol!
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
me-focused for suuuuure. but my hobbies also go hand-in-hand with what i'm sharing on this website.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
this is purely a hobby of mine, born out of boredom.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
i'm already planning on becoming a graphic designer in the future. might as well do the other thing, albeit not as a professional career... and moreso another hobby... or something...
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
#no
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
as much as i love my website and how personal it is to me, i really don't think i'll ever quit social media, lol...
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
uhhhhhhhhhh. yeah.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
i listen to so much music while i work... it's alarming. i have a bunch of albums from my favourite artists, and my own playlists in rotation. speaking of playlists...
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
everything you'll see about me and my interests is on atteliere. everything you'll see about [undisclosed] is on my nekoweb site... which isn't in use.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
rarely will i stay on one topic when i rant and yap in real life, so it does, in fact, bleed into my entries.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
i share my life sometimes, but i love to keep as much anonymity as possible; it's definitely an internet persona i've constructed. atticus isn't even my real name
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
not yet...!
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
yeah.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
autoplay. oh em eff gee, it scares the shit out of me when i look at websites at one in the morning
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
i love it when people program a bit of animation into their CSS, even if it's just slight. i think it adds more "interactivity" and life.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
both semantic HTML and divs are coexisting in my site... #peace. also, i just learned about it... but semantic HTML just makes things more organized for me 'cause it's labelled.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
i only ever consider how it looks in a default browser like chrome or safari, the one i'm using.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
i use safari for everything on the internet, to be honest. but you should use chrome if you have it, dear reader. i only ever consider how it looks on those two browsers.
55. And what OS are you on?
macOS sonoma 14.0 on a five year old macbook air.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
i've always used apple products... i might switch to microsoft one day, but only time will tell.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
fuck no.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
ahhhhhh!!!!!!!! it's startling!!!!! i'd much rather prefer if we get to choose a track by ourselves, if this is about music.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
not in any as of right now, but they're rad! i like them.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
i'm planning to have shrines (peep galleria). as of right now, i'm planning on dedicating pages to loona, the summer hikaru died and an overall music page.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
no idea.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
if it looks like someone vomited their entire personality and visual aesthetic into their website, i will be visiting.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
i think i am. all graphics here are made my me, as stated before!
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
i don't have any... i just browse the internet to find assets. sorry.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
if i stick to something, it will be seen in all other pages. for example... neue haas grotesk display.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
have fun and experiment with your site!
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
CSS. i believe a select few pages are hard coded, though.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
#beendoingthis i just searched this up, good god
69. How about table-based layouts?
to the people who do this, love what y'all do. personally, too complicated for me.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
i genuinely have no fucking idea what this means, but sure, two columns. i have two columns. i think that counts, right?
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS for sureeeeee. HTML is easy and takes the quickest amount of time for me.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
no, and i don't want to. do you seriously want me to have a dull slate of a page with no ounce of my personality in it? don't piss me off. no CSS?! that's crazy.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
i kinda base my layouts off of the content. if i can't think of the content and imagery and aesthetics to begin with, then there's no layout.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
i'm somewhere between beginner and... the middle. i'm not that skilled, but i have a decent amount of knowledge to make something nice.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
yes... is this bad...
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
i taught myself how to do it... sorta kinda. CSS was where it was at for me, as well as my lord and saviour w3schools, so i kinda used random sites with CSS support and experimented with my knowledge.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
sorta kinda
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
i use float if i align columns. which is what i think it's for. uh... ignore this.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
A Little Bit of Everything!!!!!!! it's honestly... really... bad...
80. Do you have a favourite font?
typography is deadass my special interest. i'm not even kidding. hard to choose, but neue haas grotesk is up there.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
i would if they didn't know anything about HTMLCSS code. i've always done the design aspect of things in group projects while others do the information, so it'd be kinda like that.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
i do this almost daily.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
i don't (the way i do is to keep tabs of my favourite sites open at all times. i know, not efficient at all), but i would feel very honoured.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
the theming and design.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
i kinda do! i love old technology, but the only piece of old tech i own is a camera. still cool, though.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
myself.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
no.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
oh, absolutely not. i cannot program for the life of me. if i didn't want pre-existing code, i could literally just hit up my programmer friend to make something up.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
haven't heard of it.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
i don't, but they're really cute and nostalgic.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
nope.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
it's in the editor... yeah...
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
i do not think i'm cool at all!!! lmfao. but by others? not that much... um... let's talk about something else...
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
i'm pretty embarrassed of my old work, but i think it's endearing, even though i find it cringe. young atticus is still atticus... and i've deleted things out of the thought of "you need to free up storage".
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
an archive for sure.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
i don't personally think about spilling all of my personal, heavy thoughts online. i always share vague, surface-level experiences. if i wanted to vent, i could just write in my notes app.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
i do not have online friends, surprisingly.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
nope, but if it ever gets dire, then i'll optimize them. i don't think my sitely images are profoundly big in file size.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
i need to sleep ITS MIDNIGHT....... KILL ME
